"If it is to be, it is up to me"The Independent Living Program serves youth in transition approaching the age of majority. Services include group education and therapy that help youth make the transition from state custody to independent living. View the National Independent Living website. Click here.

Purpose of the Program:
To develop a specific plan for youths’ transition from foster care to adult/independent status To help youth see themselves in a different way To prevent problems, strengthen “survival” skills and develop resources to make it on their own

Vocational - job seeking and maintenance skills Housing/housekeeping - finding affordable housing and upkeep of dwelling place, understanding leases Health education - substance abuse, personal responsibility Money management - budgeting, opening checking and saving accounts, credit, loans, insurance, taxes Legal awareness - what is a lawyer, when do I need a lawyer, understanding the legal system The Independent Living Program provides internships for undergraduate and graduate students from Southern University of Baton Rouge, Southern University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University, and Southeastern Louisiana University. The Independent Living Program serves the following parishes: Ascension, East and West Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, Pt. Coupee, St. Helena, and Tangipahoa.
